SYDNEY, Jan 2 AAP - Police are working to retrieve the body of a rock climber who died after plunging 100 metres to his death in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

Emergency crews responded to reports of a fallen climber about 11.30am (AEDT) on Friday at Mount Wilson, near the Bells Line Of Road, police said.

A large search near a cliff face along Pierces Pass was launched involving police and ambulance officers on foot as well as Polair and an Ambulance Rescue Helicopter.

"Sweeps of the area continued from the air and on foot until the man's body was located by ambulance officers shortly after 4pm," police said.

Police are in the process of retrieving the body of the man, believed to be aged in his 20s and from Sydney.

A second climber, a man, was located during the search and was being treated for a minor arm injury, the NSW Ambulance Service said.
